Shell Warns on US Natural Gas Bounce

Royal Dutch Shell expects thenatural gas prices in the US to double by 2015, rebounding strongly from the 10-year lows they have hit due to the shale gas boom as US domestic demand for the fuel grows.
According to Shell chief executive–Peter Voser, it is said in an interview that prices would remain under pressure in the short-term. However, a recovery is expected to come in the second half of the decade.

Soros Donates $1m to US Super-Pac

The billionaire investor and philanthropist–George Soros has donated $1m to a pro-Democratic campaign group in his first entry into the 2012 election, which has so far been dominated by wealthy Republican donors.
After staying on the sidelines at a time when money has been pouring into pro-Republican super-Pacs, Mr Soros’s decision to donate money to American Bridge 21st century will hearten Democrats who have despaired about the advantage of conservative fundraising.

Raising Taxes Could be US Vote Winner

Night before the week’s deadline for Americans to file their tax returns, Barack Obama started to promote a plan to raise taxes. The result of the polls revealed that the move is about the most popular thing the president has done in years.
Raising taxes in any democracy in election year is usually political suicide. However, the beauty of the “Buffett rule” for the White House is that it purports to make the rich pay higher taxes so most people don’t need to do the same.

Swaps Squad to Oversee $300tn US Market

According to a top official, it is said that a specialized enforcement “squad” has been launched by the main futures regulator in Washington as it increases scrutiny of the $300tn US derivatives market.
CFTC officials are currently finalising rules to regulate off-exchange derivatives markets and look to define the swaps.

White House Pushes Securities Reform

The US administration has claimed that some securities laws are hurting start-up companies’ ability to raise fund. Currently, the White House is triggering opposition from labour unions as well as other traditional allies with a push to relax such securities laws. Senate Democrats have been pushed by the Obama administration to adopt five proposals, including allowing companies to solicit investments online and exempting some start-ups from some of the financial disclosure rules required by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

US Economy Expands by 2.8%

In the final quarter of 2011, the US economy grew by 2.8% as the consumers ramped up their spending and businesses boosted their production.
The first reading of GDP growth of the commerce department in the fourth quarter was slightly below economists’ expectations of a 3% annualised pace. However, it was an acceleration from the third quarter’s tepid increase of 1.8%.
Growth was lifted by a 2% rise in consumer spending, compared with 1.7% in the third quarter. Even though, it was still lower than the forecast of 2.4%.

Renault and Nissan Eye US Output Boost

According to Carlos Ghosn, it was announced that Renault and Nissan might think about adding further capacity in the US as the two car plants there were almosting reaching their full production capacity.
According to chief executive of Renault and Nissan, it is also said that the companies were scaling back inventory, limiting investment and cutting costs in preparation for a forecast of 3% drop in the European auto market this year.

US Starts Black Friday Shopping Early

Shops in the US are opening earlier than usualy in an effort to secure sales on Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping date of the year. As a result, millions of Americans cut short their Thanksgiving to head to shops.
According to the National Retail Federation, it is revealed that up to 152 million people are looking to shop over the three days after Thanksgiving, with many queueing during nights in order to secure “doorbuster” discounts unveiled on the day.

Caterpillar to buy China Mining Machinery Group

The world’s biggest maker of earth-moving equipment–Caterpillar, has strengthened its presence in the market of mining machinery via proposing an acquisition deal of $886m to purchase the Chinese ERA Mining Machinery, which is a manufacturer of underground coal-mining equipment.
The deal was built on Caterpillar’ $7.6bn purchase of another maker of mining machinery–Bucyrus International last year, which managed to transform Caterpillar into the world’s biggest supplier of large mining equipment.
Buying ERA would enable Caterpillar to make further expansion into China.
