The investors are paring positions in growth-focused assets as worries over the US economy and the eurozone debt crisis go on to hit sentiment.

S&P Cuts US Debt Rating to Double A Plus

The US credit rating has been downgraded by the leading rating agency–Standard & Poor’s by one notch from triple A to double A plus in a contentious and historic move, highlighting the weakened fiscal stature of country.
According to S&P, it is said that the long-term outlook for the US remains negative. This forcast could further lower the rating to double A within the next two years if there is less spending cut than that agreed to under the debt ceiling deal.

Federal commodities regulators filed a civil lawsuit against two obscure traders in California and Australia as well as three American and global companies. The suit indicates that they attempted to hoard about two-thirds of the available supply of a crucial US market for crude oil in early 2008, then abruptly dumped it and pocketed $50 million improperly.
The regulators from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission won’t announce if the agency was conducting any other investigations into the oil speculation.

As the owner of Holiday Inn rode the wave of strong growth in the US and Asia, the world’s largest hotelier–InterContinental Hotels checked in its first quarter results with a rise of 43% in profits.
The key measure of strength of the hotel industry–revenue per available room, has climbed by 6.9%. As a result, InterContinental Hotels booked a pre-tax profit of £57.5 million, compared to £40m in the previous year.
It is pointed out that the company enjoyed the strongest growth ever since the second quarter of 2006 due to the improvement in the China as well as rapid growth in the US.

US Growth will Lag Behind UK’s

According to Ben Bernanke, chairman of Federal Reserve, it is said that the first quarter growth in the US will be weaker than in the UK. Official figures revealed that the UK economy grew by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2011, while the annualised growth of US economy will come in under 2%.
